Rich Horton's Market Summaries: Summary: Paradox, 2005Paradox is a magazine devoted to historical fiction and speculative fiction -- as a result, they seem to publish more historical fantasy than anything. They now publish twice-yearly. I saw two issues this year, #7 and #8, Summer and Winter. The editor is Christopher M. Cevasco. They published 13 stories in those two issues, four novelettes and nine short stories (one a short-short). 88,000 words total. I thought the best of the novelettes was Tom Welch's "Forty Shades of Gray", which looks at an Irishman during World War II, resisting the English occupation of Northern Ireland and the (in his view) flawed establishment of the independent Eire in the rest of the island. Said resistance now involves collaboration with the Nazis, and he is eventually forced to face the consequences of such a stance. Of the short stories I liked Ilsa J. Bick's "A Taste of Ashes" best, another WWII-oriented story, this one a fantastical look at Hitler's origins. Stories by Eugie Foster, Darron T. Moore, and Jack Whyte were also pretty good. On the whole, I'd say this was a less good year for Paradox than previous years. |
